Rowing to Hawaii

27 Jul

As you may know, I’ve dreamt about the idea of one day sailing around the world.  Well, as crazy as that may sound, even I wouldn’t consider rowing!  This lady from London rowed across the Atlantic a few years ago, and is currently half way between California and Hawaii.

The really cool thing, is that she’s been blogging and posting to her web site all along the way.  Check it out…

Flight Tornado Delay

21 Jul

I’ve flown a good bit in the past 2 years, but yesterday had to be one of the most interesting travel days I’ve encountered. Never before have I been asked to evacuate an airport.

7:50pm- A few thousand people trying to go through 1 door to get to the evacuation area:

I’ll have to admit…at first, I resisted the evacuation. The lines to get to the tunnel beneath the concourse were so long, I found a seat that I thought would be safer. I wasn’t the only one–before long there were a dozen of us staked out in our corner of the concourse. Then I realized something.

Any time I hear about an evacuation situation, whether it be hurricane, flood or tornado, I never have much sympathy for those who don’t pay attention. So, I changed my mind, and decided to follow the crowd and head downstairs.

8:10pm- We finally make it down to the tunnel:

Naturally, by the time we finally got there, the threat of tornado was gone, and we were given the all-clear to go back up stairs.

This time, as it turned out, evacuation might not have been necessary. However, it was really good to know that there was a plan in place for this type of event. Most of the airport staff were very helpful, and there was never really any panic.

So, if you’re ever at the Cincinnati Airport for a tornado, you’re probably pretty safe. But, what if you were at a Braves game? Or an SEC football game? I think we all just assume that these places have a plan, but honestly, were would 92k people go if they were in Sanford Stadium? Or 87k at Jordan-Hare? It wouldn’t be pretty.
